February 26, 1933 - November 25, 2025 — Robert M. “Rob” Kurtz Jr. passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. A longtime leader of Kurtz Bros. and a respected figure in the school supply industry, Rob dedicated his career to growing his family’s business and advancing the industry.
Mr. Kurtz began his career at Kurtz Bros. in 1956 and went on to serve as President for 25 years and Chairman for 28 years. His 58-year tenure was rooted in the legacy of his grandfather, Charles T. Kurtz, who founded the company in 1894. In 1999, with a deep commitment to the people of Kurtz Bros. and the Clearfield community, Rob transitioned the company to employee ownership, ensuring its future remained in the hands of those who helped build it.
In 1978, he served as President of the National School Supply & Equipment Association (NSSEA/EDmarket), and in 1994 was honored with the David McCurrach Distinguished Service Award.
Beyond his professional impact, Rob was deeply committed to his community. He founded the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation and supported numerous civic, educational, and economic initiatives.

Muscatine, IA — The HON Company is preparing to open its largest and most ambitious showroom to date in Chicago’s Fulton Market district, unveiling a 12,000-plus square-foot flagship designed to showcase the brand’s full portfolio of workplace and K-12 furnishings.
Scheduled to debut in June 2026, the new HON Chicago Flagship will be located on the 11th floor of 320 N. Sangamon St. and will open during Fulton Market Design Days, one of the contract furniture industry’s key annual gatherings. The space is intended to function not only as a product showroom but also as a collaborative hub where dealers, designers, and customers can experience HON’s solutions across a range of real-world environments.
The flagship will bring together HON’s commercial workplace and education furniture offerings in a single cohesive setting. Rather than presenting products individually, the showroom will be organized into a series of interconnected environments—including private offices, heads-down work zones, collaborative areas, and learning spaces—designed to demonstrate how HON products function together across an entire floorplate.
“Our Chicago Flagship is more than a showroom — it’s a statement,” said Ric Andersen, vice president of sales at The HON Company. “It brings the full strength of HON together in one immersive environment, giving our partners a smarter, faster way to collaborate, specify, and deliver complete solutions.”
The space will also highlight the company’s seating portfolio alongside its broader range of workplace and education products. Jason Heredia, vice president of marketing at The HON Company, said the showroom is meant to provide visitors with a hands-on experience of how HON’s products support modern work and learning environments.

The project also underscores HON’s broader sustainability initiatives. The company noted that its portfolio includes products certified under BIFMA LEVEL and SCS Indoor Advantage Gold programs and manufactured in facilities that operate with zero waste to landfill. HON says it has reduced Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse-gas emissions by 79 percent since 2018, surpassing HNI Corporation’s Science Based Targets initiative-validated goal, while committing to reduce Scope 3 emissions intensity by 40 percent by 2035.
The new flagship will be housed within the recently completed 320 North Sangamon office tower, a 13-story, 270,000-square-foot building developed by Tishman Speyer and Mark Goodman & Associates and designed by the architecture firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz. Completed in 2021, the building features large column-free floorplates, 13-foot ceilings, and sustainability credentials including LEED Gold and FitWel certifications.

April 22, 2025 — The EDmarket Certified Learning Place Specialist (ECLPS) program now qualifies for six graduate credits at the American College of Education (ACE). ECLPS is a research-based curriculum connecting evidence and linking realization for how the design of the built environment impacts learning performance and learning outcomes.
Through a partnership with ACE, students who successfully complete the ECLPS certification (including past graduates) are eligible for a transcript with six (6) graduate credits from ACE. The six earned graduate credits may be used specifically for a master's degree in educational business administration (M.Ed.) with ACE, or as earned graduate credits at another university that accepts the transfer.
ACE's M.Ed. degree blends financial and operational insights with the foundations of effective learning environments for continuous improvement and sustainable growth. Thus, three hours of the ECLPS coursework are correlated with the operations and facility management component, and three hours will be used in a general track study credits towards this identified master's degree, totaling six graduate credits. The graduate credit is in addition to 32 AIA LUs and HSWs earned in the ECLPS program.

January 2025 — Kidstuff Playsystems, Inc. was recently inducted into the Purdue Northwest Society of Innovators for their groundbreaking development of an innovative series of themed playsystems for children aged 2-5. September 2024 — With hotter weather occurring during the school year, school districts are turning to cooling strategies to complement air conditioning. Reflective playgrounds and roads, cool roofs and window films, shade structures and conversion of asphalt surfaces to a natural state are all being tried in various regions of the country. These measures are particularly important to help children cope with extreme heat because they sweat less and are more prone to dehydration than adults.
New EDmarket member GAF donated a bright blue, solar-reflective coating and the labor to help paint it on the parking lot at the Science, Arts and Entrepreneurship School near Atlanta as part of the school's sustainability goals and efforts to minimize heat. September 2024 — Eucators have a chance to design their ideal K-12 learning space in a contest recently announced by classroom furniture manufacturer KI. The company's third annual have a chance to design their ideal K-12 learning space in a contest recently announced by classroom furniture manufacturer Classroom Furniture Giveaway will award up to $40,000 worth of KI furniture to each of four winners; three of the prizes will go to individual classrooms, and the fourth will go to a library or media center. In addition, eight runners-up will each receive a set of 30 Ruckus whiteboards. Eligible learning spaces include classrooms, libraries, makerspaces, esports labs, art or music rooms, and more, the company explained in a news announcement. Participating teachers must be employed at a U.S. educational institution, work with grades pre-K through 12, and be at least 21 years old.
To enter, participants will use KI's online Classroom Planner to design their ideal learning space, including "a detailed rendering of the proposed space and a brief explanation of how the design reflects the educator's teaching philosophy and meets the needs of their students," the company said. K1 will select three classroom design finalists and one library design finalist in each of three geographic regions (Eastern, Western, and Central); final winners will be determined by online public vote.

The Innovation Center features a variety of vignettes, each showcasing different types of learning environments. One standout feature is the sensory room, a growing trend in schools. These rooms are thoughtfully designed to be safe, calming, and engaging spaces for students with sensory processing difficulties. At the School Specialty Innovation Center, the sensory room is accessed through illuminated strands that create a curtain-like entrance, immediately sparking curiosity. Inside, visitors will find unique lighting, tactile elements, comfortable seating, and interactive displays. February 2, 2024 — KI is thrilled to announce the four winners of its second annual classroom furniture giveaway and learning space design competition for K-12 educators. October 18, 2023 — Steelcase, a global design and thought leader in the world of work, has been named to the U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Companies to Work For by Industry list in the Misc Products and Services industry.
Steelcase was ranked among 349 companies across 20 fields of work on factors contributing to job seekers' decision-making when choosing a workplace that best meets their needs in their industries of interest. The Misc Products and Services industry also features Ebay, Mattel, Whirlpool and Nike.
"The 2024 list recognizes companies that scored highest on a variety of metrics that contribute to a positive work environment and day-to-day employee experience in their respective industries," said Susannah Snider, U.S. News managing editor of money.
To calculate the U.S. News Best Companies to Work For by Industry lists, U.S. News only considered companies that were a part of the Russell 3000 index as of June 2023 and ranked in the top 20% of their industry. The rankings take into account quality of pay, work-life balance, and opportunities for professional development and advancement by industry.

September 29, 2023 — The U.S. Department of Education announced in a letter to state grantees, the state education agencies can now request a 14-month extension to spend American Rescue Plan money just as they were allowed to do under the first two allocations of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief fund.
If approved, states and districts would have the flexibility of spending ARP funds 14 months beyond the Jan. 28, 2025, deadline or until late March 2026. With the Sept. 30, 2024, ARP obligation deadline — or when school systems must commit to spending the money — only a year away, states and school districts are hurriedly looking at their options for depleting the last and largest portion of the COVID-19 recovery money. The guidance comes as states and school districts make final decisions on spending the last and largest allocation of COVID-19 relief money. Last week❜s letter will help in this decision-making process, said education organizations.
In the letter, the department said states and their ARP subgrantees, including districts, making extension requests will need to explain how a longer spending runway would contribute to acceleration of student learning and expand on a continued path of academic recovery. Districts will need to make extension requests through state education agencies, which will then seek permissions from the Education Department.
The department previously said it would consider requests for ARP spending extensions, and that certain ARP-supported services could continue after the obligation and liquidation period, but Monday❜s letter details the specific approval process for a longer ARP spending timeline. An FAQ and extension request template will be available this fall, the letter said. ARP funding for K-12 is $121.9 billion. (source: K-12 Dive)

The scholarship of $5,000 is awarded annually to a deserving student to be used for undergraduate education. EDmarket❜s NexGen Rising Stars Awards program highlights outstanding emerging leaders for their passion, creativity, and contributions to designing, managing, and equipping learning environments of the future. In its inaugural year, the program will select outstanding, "rising star" professionals to highlight and celebrate. Nominations are reviewed based on contributions and achievements in their professional role within the educational industry. NexGen candidates will also be evaluated based on community involvement, volunteer work, work-life balance, hobbies, etc. during the application process.
